Don’t Reinvent Easter: Preach the Resurrection
Easter Sunday is one of the most attended Sundays of the year in many churches. It’s the day when pews fill up with families, seekers, and people who might not have stepped foot in a church in months—or years. With this influx of visitors, it’s understandable that pastors and church teams feel the pressure to “wow” the crowd: new stage designs, creative sermon angles, or a dramatic reinvention of the Easter message. But in our effort to be engaging, are we missing the point?
The Resurrection Doesn’t Need a Rewrite
The Easter story is already the most powerful story ever told. It doesn’t need embellishment, reframing, or marketing. The empty tomb, the risen Christ, and the hope of eternal life—that’s the headline. That’s the gospel. Rather than reinvent the wheel, churches should lean into the timeless power of the resurrection and let it speak for itself.
As the Apostle Paul wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 Corinthians 15:14). This isn’t just one theme among many. It is the central message of our faith.
Visitors Don’t Need a Show—They Need Jesus
It’s tempting to turn Easter into a “first impression” moment where we try to be cooler, louder, or more relevant than we usually are. But Easter isn’t an outreach event; it’s a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Yes, visitors are present, but what they need most is not clever content or a novel theme—they need to encounter the living Christ.
Let your Easter service reflect who your church really is. Be hospitable. Be excellent. But don’t let the pressure to impress dilute the clarity of the gospel. Our job isn’t to entertain—it’s to proclaim.
Focus on What Matters
- Preach the Resurrection: Boldly and clearly proclaim the good news that Jesus conquered death.
- Be Consistent with Your Identity: Let Easter reflect the true culture and values of your church, not a one-day performance.
- Welcome with Warmth, Not Hype: Make visitors feel seen and valued, not targeted or impressed.
- Point to Jesus, Not to Ourselves: The goal is not to win repeat attendance, but to lead people to the Savior.
Easter Is Enough
You don’t need to come up with a gimmick to make Easter meaningful. It already is. The resurrection doesn’t need rebranding; it needs announcing. So don’t apologize for preaching the same message every year. In fact, that consistency is part of what gives Easter its power. The church across the world is saying it together: “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed.”
That never gets old.
